What type of foundation is FONSHS?

FONSHS is what is known as an institutionally-related foundation as opposed to a foundation like the Woodruff Foundation. We are a not-for-profit entity created to collect and distribute gifts of money for our institution only-North Springs High School.  The 501 (c) (3) status is an IRS designation which allows donors to receive an income tax deduction for their charitable gift.

Have any specific funding needs been identified?

Priorities are set with input from faculty and staffs along with administration. This “NSHS Needs List” will be updated periodically as needs change and projects are funded. An initial FONSHS Advisory Council, which includes representatives for every area of the school community, will play a vital role in advising the FONSHS board of needs and establishing priorities.

How is the foundation raising money?

  • Individual Gifts
  • Corporate Gifts
  • Corporate Matching Gifts
  • Annual Giving Campaign
  • Gifts of Stock
  • Educator Tribute Program
  • Memorial Gifts
  • Private Foundation Grants (as we progress)
  • Planned Gifts through Wills, Trusts, Real Estate, and Annuities

How will money be dispersed?

Undesignated or Unrestricted Funds

Undesignated gifts are donations given with no stipulation as to how the money is spent. This type of gift is vital to the success of any foundation because these resources can be used to fund the greatest needs. Funds will be dispersed by the FONSHS board based on the mission statement and input from school leadership whose responsibility it is to determine priorities and long-range goals for the future. The FONSHS board will also look to the FONSHS Foundation Advisory Council for advice on the most critical student and school needs.

Who can apply for these general funds?

Everyone in the school community has the opportunity to submit funding proposals to FONSHS through a formal grant application process.

When will undesignated funds be dispersed?

Deadlines for applications are September 30, 2005 and the 2nd Friday in January. Notification and/or feedback will be sent to the applicant and school administration regarding the status of the application.

Important Note: The ability to grant undesignated funds will continue to depend on the success of our fund raising efforts and resulting funds that are available during the above funding cycles.

From whom do we get a grant application?

On-line applications can be obtained here or by emailing the Grant Committee at DanKitcar99@aol.com

Designated or Restricted Funds

Some donors prefer to restrict their gifts for a specific purpose, department, or project. These funds can ONLY BE USED FOR THE SPECIFIC DESIGNATION OF THE DONOR. Over 25 restricted accounts have already been established in the FONSHS database.  To see the most current report on these funds and their current balance, click here.

How can a department/other access their restricted funds?

The request process includes completing the application for “Designated Funds” located here. This application and the supporting documentation ensure that designated funds are spent per donors’ exact wishes. FONSHS follows approved foundation policies and procedures to ensure accountability and retain 501 (c)(3) status.

When can we begin applying for restricted funds?

Those programs and areas that have received monies can begin applying immediately. A two week lead time from the request of funds to the receipt of a check is necessary for appropriate processing. It is assumed that some designees will let their funds accumulate for priority needs that require additional funds.

From whom do we get a grant application?

On-line applications can be obtained here or by emailing the Grant Committee at DanKitcar99@aol.com

Is any money being set aside for an endowment?

10% of all undesignated gifts are set aside for an endowment fund.

Please note that our ability to garner larger donations from organizations and foundations will greatly depend on the percent of participation by our school community and the FONSHS Board.

How can I make a tax deductible donation?

Checks can be made payable to: Friends of North Springs High School, Inc. and placed in the school mail box. Donation Forms are available here.

How will donors be recognized?

In addition to thank you notes from the foundation and recipient departments and programs, an Annual Gift Report is currently being produced to thank and recognize our donors who have given during the fiscal year, July 1st - June 30th, the same as NSHS.

How can I find out how FONSHS funds are being allocated?

Accountability and transparency are paramount. FONSHS records are open for anyone to review by contacting FONSHS Treasurer, Laura Lockridge.

Can anyone attend the FONSHS Board meetings?

Yes, all board meetings are open to the public for anyone who wishes to attend. Meetings are held the second Monday of each month at 4:00 p.m., and rotate between the school and board members’ homes. Contact info@FONSHS.org to find the location of the next meeting.

How is the foundation different from the NSHS PTSA, Partners Program and Booster Clubs?

The PTSA, Partners Program, and Booster Clubs are vital to the high school for their volunteer and specific fund raising support; however, the foundation has the ability to secure resources beyond what our Partners Program and Booster Clubs can generate or what is allowed under the guidelines and by-laws of the PTSA.

How many volunteers are needed to run the foundation and make it a success?

Students, parents, teachers, staff, administration, business partners, alums, and others in the community have already invested hundreds of hours of time, expertise, and resources in the foundation because they care so deeply about North Springs and our students. Many more volunteers are needed in a number of capacities as we move forward. We would be most grateful for your help, no matter how much or how little time you have. E-mail info@FONSHS.org for more information.

Please let us know of parents or others in our school community who might wish to help.

Who serves on the FONSHS board?

The make-up of this “working, volunteer” board is representative of the school community including, business and community leaders, NSHS alumni, as well as former and current parents of NSHS students. Board members are selected for their area of expertise and experience. A non-profit board requires three things: time, talent, and treasure.  A list of Board members is posted here.
